Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Each year, April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). We are eager to take this opportunity to spread knowledge and bring awareness to the realities of sexual violence. Please join us in bringing attention to this issue! Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to learn more throughout the month of April!

Defining the Problem

Defining “sexual assault” responsibly means including the various ways this type of violence takes place, including through social media. This year’s theme for SAAM is “Building Safe Online Spaces Together.” Now more than ever it is important to build and maintain safety and respect online. Here are a few of the ways sexual assault occurs through the internet.

Sending someone unwelcome communication about sex or hateful comments based on sex, gender identity, and/or sexual orientation.
Sexting: Sending partners, friends, acquaintances, or strangers unwanted requests for nude photos or videos of sexual acts.
Performing sexual acts on webcam without the consent of everyone involved or in inappropriate settings.
Revenge Porn: Sharing private images or videos without the consent of everyone involved.
Sharing porn in spaces where not everyone has consented to view it.
Grooming children to enable their sexual abuse either online or offline.
